Hannah is also the oldest African American since records begun. Her age at death was 117 years and 248 days - eighteen days older than the world no 4, Marie-Louise Meilleur (1880 - 1998).
Hannah was born on July 16, 1875 in Alabama under the name of Lucy Terrell; she moved north to escape the racial prejudice endemic to the deep South. Lucy Hannah died in Detroit, Michigan. on March 21, 1993.
